Microsoft PH launches Glass House in Cebu
Last November 2013, Microsoft Philippines opened it's first Glass House at Greenbelt 5. This Glass House is a replica of typical home but is reimagined with the incorporation of different Windows 8.1 devices and apps made for each member of the family. On Janaury 31 to February 2, Microsoft Philippines brings Glass House in Cebu as it officially opened at SM City Cebu (Lower Ground Floor, Exhibit Area - near Moon Cafe).
This is a creative effort to demonstrate the ability of Microsoft's innovative devices and services to power and transform the lifestyle of Filipino families. The Glass House will showcase the newest Windows 8.1 devices (Lenovo MIIX2, Asus T100, Acer W4, etc.) and apps (Bing Food and Drink, Bing Health and Fitness, etc.) among other exciting features of the program. Also, Techies or everybody has a chance of winning Windows Tablet by just taking a tour of the Glass House and follow this Mechanics.

Microsoft Office 2013 is Social and Clouds Friendly
Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer revealed to consumers its new Microsoft Office 2013 which is called The New Office on July 16 in San Francisco. "The new Office is social and unlocks modern scenarios in reading, note-taking, meetings and communications and will be delivered to subscribers through a cloud service that is always up to date." stated at Microsoft.com

SAN FRANCISCO — July 16, 2012 —Today, Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled the customer preview of the new Microsoft Office, available atoffice.com/preview. The next release features an intuitive design that works beautifully with touch, stylus, mouse or keyboard across new Windows devices, including tablets. The new Office is social and unlocks modern scenarios in reading, note-taking, meetings and communications and will be delivered to subscribers through a cloud service that is always up to date.
“We are taking bold steps at Microsoft,” Ballmer said at the press conference in San Francisco. “The new, modern Office will deliver unparalleled productivity and flexibility for both consumers and business customers. It is a cloud service and will fully light-up when paired with Windows 8.”
Office at Its Best on Windows 8
- Touch everywhere. Office responds to touch as naturally as it does to keyboard and mouse. Swipe your finger across the screen or pinch and zoom to read your documents and presentations. Author new content and access features with the touch of a finger.
- Inking. Use a stylus to create content, take notes and access features. Handwrite email responses and convert them automatically to text. Use your stylus as a laser pointer when presenting. Color your content and erase your mistakes with ease.
- New Windows 8 applications. OneNote and Lync represent the first new Windows 8 style applications for Office. These applications are designed to deliver touch-first experiences on a tablet. A new radial menu in OneNote makes it easy to access features with your finger.
- Included in Windows RT. Office Home and Student 2013 RT, which contains new versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote applications, will be included on ARM-based Windows 8 devices, including Microsoft Surface.
Office Is in the Cloud
- SkyDrive. Office saves documents to SkyDrive by default, so your content is always available across your tablet, PC and phone. Your documents are also available offline and sync when you reconnect.
- Roaming. Once signed in to Office, your personalized settings, including your most recently used files, templates and even your custom dictionary, roam with you across virtually all of your devices. Office even remembers where you last left off and brings you right back to that spot in a single click.
- Office on Demand. With a subscription, you can access Office even when you are away from your PC by streaming full-featured applications to an Internet-connected Windows-based PC.
- New subscription services. The new Office is available as a cloud-based subscription service. As subscribers, consumers automatically get future upgrades in addition to exciting cloud services including Skype world minutes and extra SkyDrive storage. Subscribers receive multiple installs for everyone in the family and across their devices.
Office Is Social
- Yammer. Yammer delivers a secure, private social network for businesses. You can sign up for free and begin using social networking instantly. Yammer offers integration with SharePoint and Microsoft Dynamics.
- Stay connected. Follow people, teams, documents and sites in SharePoint. View and embed pictures, videos and Office content in your activity feeds to stay current and update your colleagues.
- People Card. Have an integrated view of your contacts everywhere in Office. The People Card includes presence information complete with pictures, status updates, contact information and activity feeds from Facebook and LinkedIn accounts.
- Skype. The new Office comes with Skype. When you subscribe, you get 60 minutes of Skype world minutes every month. Integrate Skype contacts into Lync and call or instant message anyone on Skype.
Office Unlocks New Scenarios
- Digital note-taking. Keep your notes handy in the cloud and across multiple devices with OneNote. Use what feels most natural to you — take notes with touch, pen or keyboard, or use them together and switch easily back and forth.
- Reading and markup. The Read Mode in Word provides a modern and easy-to-navigate reading experience that automatically adjusts for large and small screens. Zoom in and out of content, stream videos within documents, view revision marks and use touch to turn pages.
- Meetings. PowerPoint features a new Presenter View that privately shows your current and upcoming slides, presentation time, and speaker notes in a single glance. While presenting, you can zoom, mark up and navigate your slides with touch and stylus. Lync includes multiparty HD video with presentations, shared OneNote notebooks and a virtual whiteboard for collaborative brainstorming.
- Eighty-two-inch touch-enabled displays. Conduct more engaging meetings, presentations and lessons, whether in person or virtually, with these multitouch and stylus-enabled displays from Perceptive Pixel.
While the full lineup of offerings and pricing plans will be announced in the fall, Ballmer discussed three new Office 365 subscription services. When available, each new subscription offer will include the new 2013 editions of the Office applications — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access. In addition, subscribers will receive future rights to version upgrades as well as per-use rights across up to five PCs or Macs and mobile devices. The three new editions will be the following:
- Office 365 Home Premium — designed for families and consumers. This service also includes an additional 20 GB of SkyDrive storage and 60 minutes of Skype world minutes per month.
- Office 365 Small Business Premium — designed for small businesses. This service also includes business-grade email, shared calendars, website tools and HD webconferencing.
- Office 365 ProPlus — designed for enterprise customers who want advanced business capabilities and the flexibility to deploy and manage in the cloud.

Microsoft Kinect, available after Halloween
Microsoft is excited with its another pride, the Kinect. It is an Xbox 360 add-on that allow kids, men and women in all ages without using remote or controller. It is just a slim black bar located near a Television which detects movements and hand gestures of players. Furthermore, voice commands can control games, movies and music on this gadget.

Windows Phone 7, Microsoft Finally launches Smartphone
Early this year, smartphones have been in mobile market and are making its margin to the top. On October 11, 2010 - Monday, Microsoft launched its version of Smartphone in the name of Windows Phone 7. Eventhough it is considered late in release, this phone is unique and has the proud feature called Tiles. These tiles represent the applications that users prefer to be displayed in the start-up screen. Moving forward, Windows Phone 7 uses an elegant operating system which is not present or used in any early version of smartphones.
This new phone will make its debut in European markets on October 21 while on November 8, US markets will take its turn.

More than just a games folder, the Games Hub is a centralized place for accessing games, finding new ones and connecting with friends. It extends the Xbox LIVE social gaming experience and delivers a mobile gaming experience users can only get on Windows Phone 7.
4. Productivity on the Go: Office Hub
The Microsoft Office Hub provides mobile versions of familiar Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile to view and edit documents. Users can also access information via Microsoft SharePoint Workspace Mobile 2010.
5. Pictures Hub: Take & Share Pictures
Windows Phone 7 includes a dedicated camera button that works even when a phone is locked to help capture that important shot. Windows Phone also makes it easy to enjoy pictures, share them with others and view and comment on others’ pictures from this Hub.

Eventhough its ambitious to say, Microsoft goal is to deliver a phone that truly integrates the things people really want to do, puts those things right in front of them, and either lets them get finished quickly or immerses them in the experience they were seeking.

Nokia gets new CEO, Microsoft Exec takes over
After the controversial resignation of HP CEO, Mark Hurd and his jumping to Oracle, here comes a BIG news to the technology/IT companies. Microsoft executive Stephen Elop will be replacing Nokia Corp. CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo with its aim to regain lost share in the very competitive smart phone market.

Elop has played a role in the growing cooperation between Nokia and Microsoft in recent years. In 2009, Nokia launched its first laptop, a netbook with a 10-inch screen that runs on Microsoft's Windows 7 software. Previously, access to some of Microsoft's most popular Web services, such as Hotmail and instant messaging, have been built into Nokia phone models.
The 57-year-old Kallasvuo, who joined the company in 1982, will leave as president and CEO on Sept. 20. Elop will replace Kallasvuo on Nokia's board, though Kallasvuo will continue to chair the board of the Nokia Siemens Networks unit in a non-executive capacity. Nokia Siemens Networks, Nokia's joint venture with Siemens AG of Germany, makes networking equipment.

Dr Henry Edward Roberts, the father of the personal computer died last April 1 due to Pneumonia. He is the main reason for the very promising career of some Microsoft founders like Bill Gates and Paul Allen.

The two computer wizards, Gate and Paul, were interested of writing a software code to that machine. As a result is their so-called AltairBasic, this is the foundation of Microsoft's business today.

Today (February 15, 2010), Microsoft icon and CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled the next generation of phones (smart phones) and most specifically, Windows Phone, the so called WINDOWS PHONE 7 SERIES. If you are a fan of XBOX games or a fanatic of Zune Music, then you can all get them in this phone. For the first time, Microsoft brought the features together in just a phone.
“Today, I’m proud to introduce Windows Phone 7 Series, the next generation of Windows Phones,” said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft.

And i guess, this phone is another way of catching google.com in search engine market coz Microsoft was setting up the phone with a dedicated hardware button for BING, another rival of Google and yahoo in searching. For the design, i do not find it new since some of which are already featured in Samsung smart phones so with Iphone , Google Nexus One and others.
This latest trend of smartphones, Windows Phone 7 Series is available on Holiday 2010. And here in the Philippines? Maybe in the next few months after its released in the US or maybe next year.

And i guess, this phone is another way of catching google.com in search engine market coz Microsoft was setting up the phone with a dedicated hardware button for BING, another rival of Google and yahoo in searching. In fact, if they have the best developer in the world, they can make their own microblogging service without copying the codes and the worst, the design and template.

MSN New Look: A major make-over
MSN.com, Microsoft's website, has its new look on Wednesday at the US time. Lots of changes were made, some part of the old stuff were removed and some boxes were added. As advised by Erik Jorgenson, corporate vice president for MSN, the new design aims to address customer or user's feedback and complaints. Some of which are the following points:

As i checked it in their preview site, at the bottom right, links to the Facebook and Twitter sites were added in a box. Also, what captured my attention the most, is the slider just above the header part. It contains the latest updates and news featured in the site. I think it follows the latest trends of blogger's template. Generally, the site are divided into sections which in return give the users a fun way of browsing and searching using their bing search engine site.
The enough misery stamps before a star bankrupt.

- Hard time finding what users were looking for
- Dissatisfied with search results prior to the launch of BING

Working with Windows 7 by Voice Commands
This can be a very interesting post ever in my blog.
Speech Recognition is a feature already available in windows vista and is now in full blast in windows 7, the most talked OS online and offline. So how do Speech Recognition and Voice Commands work? As i did my report in Management and Information System, i learned a lot in the field of Artificial Intelligence most especially its most used subfield in business, the Expert Systems. But as of now, what captured my interest is the other subfield of AI, the NLP or Natural Language Processing in which Speech Recognition and Voice Commands are part of. Truly, technology is getting more and more complicated and oops!, of course, useful.
What is Natural Language Processing? This is a process in which human language will serve as input to NLP programs and translate it into a standard set of statements that a computer can execute. And one of most promising product of which is the Speech Recognition and Voice Commands of Microsoft Windows 7.

And now, let us tackle more on the voice commands. But first, you need to have a high-quality microphone and i believe Microsoft recommends a USB headset model for wise and best performance. After then, we can start commanding our computer with some of below guides, words and/or phrase with their corresponding actions and outcome.
"Start" - Windows Speech Recognition will open and display the START menu
"All Programs" - Of course, this will display all programs installed in the system and after then, you may continue working with that specified program
"open (program)" - this command is applicable only if you already know the specified program and for that, you may skip that navigation part. Example of this is "OPEN MSPAINT"
"File", "Open" - this is applicable only to windows which has menus available
"Show Numbers" - windows speech recognition tags every clickable object with a number in your screen
"Click" or "Double Click" + NUMBER - this will accomplish the command
With individual Windows, you can work with:
"maximize" , "minimize" , "close" followed by the name of the program
To minimize all programs opened say "Show desktop"
These are some of the common Voice commands available in windows 7. I bet i now have 1 reason to grab that Operating System. What ya think?

Online MS Office 2010: for free or not?
It was last week when Microsoft announced that they will offer a "Free" lightweight online version of Microsoft 2010, which includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote. Since then, I started to read reviews and press releases of this move from Microsoft and started to draft a post regarding this big change that the company does. But what made me changed my mind to post that said draft is because of Michael Hickins's report on the Hidden cost of Microsoft's Free online office suite.

Just a quote from his post, "But wait – there’s more! A Microsoft spokesperson told me that customers will need to buy a SharePoint server, which ranges from $4,400 plus CALs or $41,000, all CALs included if they want to share documents using the online version of Office 2010"
I bet its really clear that there is always a hidden agenda on that Free offerings. And as usual, at the end of the day, business is business.
At first, i enjoyed comparing these two online applications; namely Microsoft office live workspace and Google Docs, but at the end i would prefer to use Google docs than any other, most especially when i used it to convert office 2007 files into 2003. The two web versions of applications, have offer lots of advantages, doing some documents online anytime and anywhere but do Microsoft risks its sells of Office Applications (as we know, Office is the company's big cash drawer) and goes with online versions?

Office 210: The Changes
And now, as what i am always looking forward, is the idea and inquiry what could be the changes that Microsoft can offer rather than the online version thingy?
[2007 VS 2010: Ribbon Changes]
First of all, is the revision of the Microsoft Office 2007 trade mark, the Ribbon. In the offline version, Microsoft designed the Ribbon enclosed with a circular form on which at first i thought it was just another nonfunctional design until such time i learned that it is somewhat like a functional button having there the sub menus; New, Open, Save and others.
Another offering is the photo editing tools, which can now be accessed inside the Ribbon. You just need to open a picture file, then a format tab will show and you can now do some photo enhancement.

And another ribbon inclusion program (which is excluded last 2007 version) is the Outlook 2010. It do now have full marked ribbon and is offering the same overall interface except its new feature Quick Steps. Excel and Word have no lots of new features on them not like outlook and of course the PowerPoint which give a video features in it.
Just a note, to access the lightweight version of office 2010, you all need a Windows Live ID (formerly hotmail account). But not so sure if you can have a total access on that package since Microsoft has not released any news about it although they have appended the word "free".

Battle of Search Engines Continues
Does Bing surpasses Google? Coz it does with Yahoo!
Many reviews flash the net world which started on the launching day of Bing, Microsoft's revised search engine site, until this day. Some says Google still remain on top and some, Bing works the best.
But for my point of view both have the same features in the some way that the only difference is their respective presentation of the site.
Let set for example, the search for images. In Google, images are displayed in an ordered manner with label and source site below them while in Bing, images also are displayed well with no labels on them, but if you try to mouse over those images, you will see then the snapshot of these images with the file name, source site and others.

filtering or sorting the display according to size, layout, color, style and people. And so with Google images, you can let Google shows those images you want "by type or size" or "by type and size" and with their corresponding colors.

Other thing is, the Homepage display of each of these sites. In Bing, they usually changing the background image and obviously, promoting some area or location in the US. While in Google, as we used to it, they do some art with their name in the homepage that corresponds to the celebration or any significant event on that specific day.

These observation are just few of the many reviews we can encounter in the web. And for sure, as a customer or user, we need to know what this specific site offers indifferently from its competitor, we need to know what are its new features that the other site doesn't have and most importantly, we need the data more accurately and sharp.

Energy Software: Microsoft Vs. Google
What's up with Microsoft and Google? Do you think the competition is for vying the big market share in the internet search only? Then you are definitely wrong, after Google announced its PowerMeter, which reads information coming from a smart meter and displays it real-time on a web site (in short this is a web application), Microsoft has announced Tuesday their new internet software that would help consumers measure their electricity usage and thus, they can figure out how to cut it off.

"Microsoft Hohm demonstrates how a combination of advanced software and Internet-based services can help people track, understand and manage their personal energy usage."Craig Mundie, chief research and strategy officer at Microsoft, said.
Microsoft Hohm will be launched by next week and the good thing, the service will be free for all consumers but to those users who have advanced utility meters and whose utilities sign up to use the system will get more accurate and useful information.

Google has built this what they call Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook which is a very useful tool for users and business people to continue using some of their plugins even if they are now switching to Google Apps. In addition, the team focuses on allowing Outlook users to connect to Google Apps for business email, contacts and calendar. But the problem is, some users having plugins with their outlook cannot continue to work with the Google Apps Sync for Microsoft.

As Bing Issues buzzed the online world last week or i may say early this week, Microsoft is now taking action on this not so good outcome of their promising search engine.
And i am talking about the Bing unblocked Porn displays in their search site. But today, according to Mike Nichols, General Manager of Bing, they have done two changes to address the issue.
First, a separate single domain was made, explicit.bing.net - this will serve as filter site for those explicit images and videos. If you think you can browse the said link, then sorry, it is invisible to us, users and if you really want to try to access such, you will be automatically redirected to its main page, bing.com
Second, Bing has now starting to display the URL source of the query string for images and video content.

Yahoo landed in third place with a share of 10.22 % only but Microsoft Bing surpasses with 16.28 % share and as expected, Google still top all search engine market with 71.47 %.
The Microsoft Beta Bing is now online and can be used and browsed. But after i tested it several times, i found it boring which even my site did not topped the search, lols. But i like the over all presentation of the search engine in the homepage.

Yes, at last. After all the "later this year or mid this year or early 2010" speculations, now Microsoft has confirmed its official Launch Date of the most awaited OS after the very problematic Windows Vista, the Windows 7. October 22 of this year, Companies and consumers can now buy this OS from retailers and preinstalled in new PCs.
After this date, then people can test if it surpasses the headache-causer windows vista and can contribute a lot of productivity and most of all, user friendly interfaces. As to date, Windows 7 is now on release candidate stage and as shown from reviews, it has now the capability of a great performance and compatibility is not a problem not like Vista which made every IT companies and customers sticked to windows XP for many years.

To Kumo or To Bing?
Microsoft alleged new search engine codename: Kumo was forgotten and put to trash as the company is now considering its new name BING. And the shaking news is that Microsoft is working to have a massive Ad campaign.
According to AdvertisingAge, Bing will cost for about $80-$100 million not just online, but this includes advertisement and promotions on TV, print and radios. It cannot be denied that this move will be compared to Google's advertising launching budget of $25 million only last year. Will this big amount pushed by Microsoft can do a big change in internet search market?
I always remember when i ask my boss or classmate with a certain topic, they would preferably replied, "Google it!" . Can Bing change this users view of internet search? Can Bing beat Google's new tools and search options? Can Bing surpass Yahoo's new features of searching online? Can Bin even ask ASK.com?
